Chapter 9

The insistent ringing of my cell stirred me from one of the best nights of sleep I'd ever had.

Whoever was calling me at five a.m. better have a damn fine reason.

"Yeah?" I answered.

"Detective Tao, this is Officer Hurst." The recognition of her name made me sit up straight, now fully awake. She was one of the officers assigned to follow Diana Gomez.

"What's going on?"

"Shots fired at the Gomez residence. Estrada and I are about to enter."

"I'm on my way." I dropped the phone on the bed as I leaped out, grabbed fresh clothes from the closet, and pulled them on.

"What's going on?" A disheveled Bryce sat up and rubbed at his eyes.

"Work shit," I replied. "Gotta go." Without thinking, I leaned over and kissed him as if we were long-time lovers. I froze when I realized what I had done, but he grinned and waved me off.

I sped all the way to the Gomez residence. As much as I wished I could take the time to ponder what was going on with Bryce Carrick, such as what the hell was I thinking, I couldn't. Work was the one thing I could think about. What I had to concentrate on. I had my game face on when I arrived and entered the modest home.

In addition to Officer Hurst, a couple other patrol officers were also there. Dave Gomez sat in the living room on a tan, flowery couch, hunched over with a blanket covering him. I caught the sight of a bare hip when the quilt slipped down for an instant. Hurst was speaking to Gomez but stopped when she saw me and strode over.

"You'll want to check out the master bedroom." She pointed down a hallway. "Last door on the left."

She returned to Gomez, and I headed for the bedroom. The door was open, and I stepped in. It was empty except for Officer Estrada. Well, him and the dead body on the king size bed.

The corpse of Diana Gomez was splayed out on her back-several bullet holes in her chest. Her mouth and eyes were open in an odd expression of surprise and terror. Just to the side of her right hand was a wood-handled kitchen knife. I leaned close so I could read the brand of the knife without touching it-Victorinox.

Without glancing at Estrada I asked, "What happened?"

"Hurst and I entered the residence after hearing three gunshots. We identified ourselves and heard someone in here. When we entered, Officer Gomez still had the gun in his hand, but I retrieved it from him and secured it."

I stood and faced Estrada. "Did he tell you what happened?"

He nodded. "He said that she came after him with a knife and he had to shoot her to save his own life."

"When CSU arrives, make sure they get pictures of where Dave was when he fired."

"Yes, sir."

I checked out the rest of the room before returning to the living room. Dave was still on the couch but Hurst was speaking to Doyle, Gomez's boss on the gang task force.
